The Bordeaux region is a wine lover’s paradise and the ideal setting for a gourmet holiday. Home to some of the World’s most famous and most expensive wines, the Bordeaux region counts over 50 AOC appellations. If you haven’t already visited, then maybe its time you treated yourself to a luxurious long weekend.
The Classic Route invites you to follow the Route des Vins through the Haut-Médoc where each village is a house-hold name, stopping off at some of the World’s most famous chateaux to sample their wares. Explore the rive droite of the Garonne, descending through the Côtes de Bordeaux region, then traverse the delightful green rolling hills of the Entre-Deux-Mers, to discover the beautiful village of St Émilion.
You’ll have ample time to stop off and taste the fine wines from a range of vineyards, to lunch in the traditional brasseries where local market produce is served with the regions fine wines. In the evenings take your time over a meal in one of the regions many excellent restaurants, a chance to leave the keys at home and really enjoy some fine wine.
If you need a break from visiting the chateaux, the town of Bordeaux itself is well worth a visit. Its history dates back to the 3rd century AD, but most of modern Bordeaux owes its splendour to the architects of the 18th century.
Alternatively, sample the local oysters at the basin of Arcachon, or work off a decent lunch with a round of golf. Or perhaps you’d like to spend an afternoon at a health-spa with a difference and enjoy a spot of vinotherapy ?
